G Class Driver's License: Benefits and How to Get It

G Class.png

In Ontario, driver's licenses are separated into three categories: G1, G2 and G. In this scale the G1 is the learners license, while the G is a fully fledged license. A G class license is essential for all drivers in Ontario who are hoping to drive for a period longer than 5 years, as well as for drivers who are looking to reduce rates on their insurance policies. "I've been dealing with Hansma Automotive for decades simply because Pete and his crew are good honest people. The service is great and trustworthy. They have an excellent warranty program also. Pete has become like family. Daphne and I highly recommend Hansma Automotive to any one who wants honesty and integrity in their auto shop."

What Does a G License Include?

A G license allows the license holder to drive any car, van or small truck, or a combination of a vehicle plus a towed vehicle up to a weight of 11,000 kg (maximum weight of towed vehicle is 4,600 kg).

A G license holder is not permitted to drive a motorcycle, air-brake equipped vehicle (bus or transport truck), or any other large vehicle.

Most Ontario residence will seek a G license after their first year of licensing. You can click here for more information.

License Requirements

In order to apply for a G license there are a couple of requirements. They include:

  • Hold a valid G2 license for at least 1 year (8 months if they have completed a recognized driver training program).
    • To acquire a G2 license, a driver must complete a knowledge test and short road test.
  • Pass a vision test.

Here's a video that should help you undestand how to progress from a G1 license all the way to a G License:

If a driver passes these requirement, then they will need to pass a further road examination that can last up to 45 minutes and which will test the driver in all areas of their driving abilities, including parking and highway driving. You can click here for more information.

Benefits of a G License

It is recommended that all drivers attain a G license as soon as they're eligible because of the different benefits it provides. A G license allows for the following benefits:

  • It does not expire (only additional testing upon reaching old age will be necessary)
  • Lower insurance rates
  • Ability to drive without passenger and other restrictions

If you're looking to apply for your G license we recommend you get in contact with your local service center. This video below should help you understand the process of what you should expect during your G license application:
