Over the past couple of years, mechanics have gotten a really bad reputation. Special stories and news segments have been dedicated to trying to catch dishonest mechanics. Since most people do not understand the mechanical side of cars, mechanics have become very essential. Mechanics have the trust of everyone when it comes to their car because you have no one else to go to. Certain unethical mechanics use this to their advantage to make some extra cash. Dishonest mechanics can create fairy tale issues with your car and charge you hundreds of dollars because you do not know any better.

Here at Hansma, we have dedicated the past 30 years to building honest relationships with our customers. We train and expect our mechanics to be the best they can by providing you the best possible service.

1. Surprises

There should never be surprises! A sign of a good and honest mechanic should always keep in touch with you by providing updates on what is happening with your car.

If there is such an issue, the mechanic should always text/call you to give you a warning and not make much of a surprise when you go and pick up your car. It should always be a red flag when you go to a shop and there are always last-minute surprises of problems you’ve never heard about.

2. Why & how

If there are any surprise repairs, always make sure the mechanic always explains WHY the repair is necessary and HOW they will repair it. Too many times dishonest mechanics never fully explain the issue to customers in knowing that the customers will not understand and just give mechanics free money.

It should always be a red flag when the mechanic does not fully explain this off the bat. It should raise more concern when you ask them “WHY & HOW?” and they not fully explain what is truly happening with your car.

Asking “WHY & HOW?” will find you an honest mechanic and save you money!

3. Speak to Technicians

A big sign of an honest mechanic is when they let you talk to the technician over the phone. Speaking to the very person working on your car is always a good sign to get a feel of what is truly happening.

If a mechanic does not let you speak to the technician after you asked, it is a MAJOR red flag of a dishonest mechanic trying to scam you.

It is always important to ask to speak to the technician because it gives you a piece of second-hand information and will help you fully understand the issue.

4. Menu of Services Parts

Usually, when an auto shop has a menu of service packages, you most likely will end up purchasing more than you need for a specific issue. If they only have bundles and will only let you select bundles then that should be a red flag to take your car elsewhere.

An honest mechanic should always inspect your car, even if it’s just for an oil change. The mechanic should ONLY let you know the services that need to be done.

An honest mechanic should never sound like a salesman and more like a person trying to help you out.
