Transmission Repairs - Keeping The Cost Down

Transmission repairs can be very costly and blow a large hole in any family's vehicle budget. That is why we begin by making a multi-point inspection to determine what the problem is. In this way, we can potentially save you from being charged for a large and unnecessary repair.

  • The first step is to check the transmission fluid for colour and smell. Discoloured fluid or an unpleasant odour is a sign of possible wear and internal damage.

  • Next, where possible, and if the vehicle is driveable, we do a road test. During this time, we test for slippage, noise, and harsh or erratic shifting.

  • A lift Inspection allows us to look under the vehicle and do a visual inspection. We examine the U-joints, transmission mounts, fluid retention, electronic controls, throttle linkage, modulators, the engine RPM and neutral switch. Sometimes this will allow us to find a problem where only a minor correction is required.

  • A pan examination will allow us to take a look at what might be happening inside your transmission. An unusual amount of metal particles present indicates that there is probably some internal damage and a more thorough internal examination will be required.

Types of Transmission Repairs

There are a number of types of possible transmission repairs depending on the severity of the damage. Repairs can include the following:

Simple Repairs

Sometimes what you may fear is a major repair is in fact only minor. Our examination process, listed above helps us to keep your cost down as your vehicle may only require adjustments or the replacement of accessible parts.

New and Used Transmissions

Using CARQUEST auto parts, we can replace any part. In the unlikely event that your transmission is beyond repair, we can replace the entire transmission with either a new one or if you prefer, a used one. Used transmissions are generally not recommended as you may unknowingly be inheriting an entire set of new problems. Transmission repairs can take a few hours.

Rebuilt Transmissions

If your transmission is damaged, but not irreparably, we can suggest a rebuild. This enables you to retain the transmission that was originally installed in your vehicle while benefiting from many new parts.
