Ontario G License FAQ

  • The major elements covered in the G license road test at all testing centers include:

    • Being able to drive on major roads and expressways including merging on and off, maintaining appropriate speed and space, signalling and more.

    • Turns, curves and lane changes.

    • Driving through intersections.

    • Driving in business areas.

To help clear up the backlog created by COVID-19, the following elements will not be included in the G road test at full-time Drive Test centres and temporary road test locations until further notice. They will, however, be included at Part-time Travel Point locations.

    • Parallel parking.

    • Roadside stops.

    • 3-point turns.

    • Driving in residential neighbourhoods.

Please check with the Government of Ontario site before taking your test to confirm whether or not these elements have been included again in the testing. You can learn more about what is included in the Ontario G License test here.

  • You can take your Ontario G license road test 12 months after you have passed your G2 license.

  • There are 3 options for booking a road test. They include:

You can book your Ontario G license test online, by phone, or in-person

  • You need to go to an Ontario DriveTest centre to take your road test.

  • You must cancel your test at least 48 hours before your scheduled appointment. If you do not, then you will have to pay a cancellation fee.

  • G1: Your G1 is similar to a “learner’s permit” or “learner’s license”. To get your G1 you must pass an eye exam and a written driving knowledge test.

If you only have a G1 license, there are certain restrictions or conditions that you must abide by. These include:

    • You must have a zero blood alcohol level.

    • You must have a working seatbelt for each passenger in your vehicle.

    • You must drive with an experienced driver in your car.

    • You cannot drive on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways

    • You cannot drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m.

G2: This is your second level of driving. Once you pass this portion of the test (a road test), you no longer need to drive with an experienced driver, but you do have a number of restrictions that you need to follow.

If you only have a G2 license, there are certain restrictions or conditions that you must abide by. These include:

    • You must have a zero blood alcohol level.

    • You must have a working seatbelt for each passenger in your vehicle.

    • You can drive without another experienced driver in your car

    • You can drive on all Ontario roads

    • You can drive at any time of day unless you are under 19 years of age.

If you are 19 years old or younger, these extra conditions apply:

    • For the first 6 months of having your G2, you can only drive with one passenger who is 19 years old or younger between the hours of midnight and 5:00 a.m.

    • After 6 months of having your G2, you can drive with up to 3 passengers who are 19 years old or younger between the hours of midnight and 5:00 a.m.

G: The G Class is a full driver’s license. To get your G License, you must pass another road test. With a full G license:

    • You can only drive G-class vehicles.

    • Your blood alcohol concentration cannot exceed 80mg.

    • If your blood alcohol concentration is between 50mg-80mg, then you could receive administrative penalties like a roadside suspension or immediate roadside prohibition.

    • Your blood alcohol level needs to be zero if you are 21 years of age or younger.

You will be charged a fee if you do not cancel your test at least 48 hours before your appointment

  • You have a maximum of 5 years to get your full G license. The process consists of finishing two learning levels: G1 and G2 as well as passing 2 road tests.

  • There are 3 possible scenarios if you fail your road test. Here they are:

    1. You can try the test again if your G1 license has not expired.

    2. You will need to start the whole process again and pay the test fees if your G1 license has already expired.

    3. You can take your G1 test again if your G2 licence is about to expire. this will give you 5 more years as a G2 driver in which to finish the process.

  • You will need to have the following in order to take a road test:

    *Two pieces of identification
    *A road-worthy vehicle
*Glasses or contacts if you are required to wear them
    *Test fee amount
