1. What is the difference between a courtesy car and a shuttle service?
Some mechanics offer you a courtesy vehicle while others have a shuttle service. Here is the difference.
Shuttle Service:
With a shuttle service, a driver hired by your garage will take or "shuttle" you to where you would like to go while your vehicle is being repaired or serviced.
For example, the driver could take you to your home or job and then pick you up again once your vehicle is ready. This is very helpful so that you do not have to wait long at the garage and you do not have to arrange for a ride from a friend or family member.
Courtesy Vehicle:
Unlike a shuttle service, a courtesy vehicle is loaned so that you can use it while your car is being serviced. If you need to run errands or if something comes up and you need to go somewhere, you will not be stranded.

Advantages of a Courtesy Vehicle over Shuttle Service:
A courtesy vehicle gives you much more freedom than a shuttle service. Usually, with a shuttle service, you are just dropped off at one location and then picked up once your vehicle is ready. A courtesy allows you the same kind of freedom as having your own vehicle.
In addition, if your vehicle is going to be in the garage overnight or for a few days, then you will not be stranded without a vehicle if you are using a car provided by your garage.
Often with a shuttle service, there will be more than one customer that is being driven to a location at the same time, so you may not be taken directly to your destination, which may take you longer. With a courtesy car, you are the only one in the vehicle.

There are a couple of different times when you can expect free courtesy vehicles.

Some garages offer a FREE courtesy vehicle service to their customers while their vehicles are being repaired.
Part of an insurance claim:
Getting a free car to use could also be an option if you are getting your vehicle repaired as part of an insurance claim. Some insurance policies will offer a courtesy vehicle car as part of their policy, but not all of them will.
For example, if you simply have comprehensive insurance, then you will not get a free rental car while your vehicle is being repaired. If you add on OPCF 20 endorsement to your policy, then you will be covered for the cost of renting a car or hiring a taxi while your vehicle is being repaired. Adding this type of coverage will increase your monthly insurance payment.
You need to check with your insurance company to see if there is a limit to the total amount that you can spend on this service.

3. Are there any extra charges for a courtesy car?
Courtesy cars offered to you by your local mechanic are almost always free. You will usually need to pay for any gas that you use though which is totally understandable.
4. Do you need to Pay for additional insurance to drive this vehicle?
You should not have to pay for insurance if you are given a vehicle from a garage as a complimentary service while your car is being repaired.
If you are getting a vehicle repaired as part of an insurance claim, then you may have to pay extra for insurance or have this vehicle added to your insurance policy.
